ABOUT THE WORK
Brendan Murphy’s Spaceman sculptures, named the Boonji by the artist, have become a globally recognizable visual signature, merging elements of science, emotion, and pop culture into an iconic cosmic figure.
Wide Open presents the Boonji character in a triumphant, skyward-facing stance—chest lifted, head tilted back, and arms flung wide in a gesture of victory, strength, and unyielding pride. This powerful posture channels the aspirational spirit central to Murphy’s practice, transforming his distinctive visual language into a moment of pure, expansive physical expression.
This work is part of the artist’s Collectible Sculpture Series, a group of smaller-format editions, each individually hand-finished with Murphy’s distinctive visual language of words, formulas, and symbols. Conceived to merge accessibility with conceptual depth, the series and each work within it offer a more intimate scale and entry point while preserving the philosophical and visual rigor of Murphy’s larger practice.
The work reflects Murphy’s ongoing exploration of aspiration, identity, and human complexity within an ever-expanding universe.
